Question 1

What is Kriya Yoga?

Accepted Answer

Kriya Yoga is an ancient, scientific system of breath-awareness, energy control, and meditation. It utilizes the breath to direct life energy (prana) along the spine, harmonizing the nervous system and leading the mind naturally into deep, silent meditation.

Question 2

Who can practice Kriya?

Accepted Answer

Kriya Yoga is meant for people from all walks of life—there are no barriers of background, belief, or lifestyle. "Kriya" literally translates to "activity" or "action," while "Yoga" represents union or silent consciousness. Thus, Kriya Yoga means "activity in silence"—performing our earthly duties while remaining anchored in deep, unshakeable stillness. Because this path is specifically structured for householders (our teachers themselves are working professionals with backgrounds in business and engineering), it is uniquely suited for those with active careers, jobs, and family lives. Anyone can adopt this practice to bring profound harmony to their daily activities.

Question 3

How do I take the next step if I feel called to learn Kriya Yoga?

Accepted Answer

If you feel a sincere pull toward this path, we encourage you to read the lineage writings at https://www.kriyateachingtrust.com/kriya, study the book reader at https://www.kriyateachingtrust.com/book, and then submit a direct inquiry to Kriya Teaching Trust at https://www.kriyateachingtrust.com/contact. There, you can register for upcoming silent retreats, preparatory classes, or contact our coordination team.

Question 4

What age is right to start practicing Kriya Yoga?

Accepted Answer

Anyone over the age of 13 can begin practicing Kriya Yoga. In fact, the sooner one starts, the better it is. Commencing practice in youth helps establish a strong foundation of inner silence, mental clarity, and emotional balance that enhances the quality of life of an individual throughout their entire life.

Question 5

How does one observe? or follow choice-less observation.

Accepted Answer

Choice-less observation is the art of simply witnessing whatever arises in your field of awareness—whether it is a thought, a physical sensation, an emotion, or the breath—without selecting, judging, analyzing, or trying to change it. In our practice, we do not struggle with the mind or attempt to force it to be still. If a thought arises, we simply watch it appear, stay for a moment, and dissolve back into silence, much like watching clouds pass across a vast sky. We do not run after the thought, nor do we push it away. We observe with complete neutrality and friendliness. Whenever we notice that we have been carried away by a train of thoughts, we gently and without self-criticism return our attention to the physical sensation of the breath. Over time, this choice-less, non-judgmental observation reveals that we are not the passing thoughts or emotions themselves, but the vast, unshakeable silent background of awareness in which they all arise and subside.

Question 6

Why is a retreat needed?

Accepted Answer

A silent retreat provides a long duration of silence that is not usually possible for people living in a busy, demanding environment. It serves as a good time to withdraw from external stimulations and look within, allowing you to reconnect deeply with yourself. This is why retreats are so beneficial—they help you quiet the mental noise, establish a strong foundation in sadhana, and return completely refreshed and reset to your normal daily life.
